Steel demand seen at 10m tons in '13

JAKARTA Indonesia's demand for steel is expected to reach 10 million tons in 2013 in line with the rising number of infrastructure projects, Industry Minister Fahmi Idris said."In the next six years, domestic demand for steel will approach 10 million tons," Fahmi said on Tuesday.
Domestic demand for steel reached 6 million tons in 2007 while the country's steel production ranged between 4.5 million and 5 million tons a year, he said.

To anticipate the rising demand, the government was encouraging investment in the steel industry particularly in areas producing raw materials to make steel, he said.

The government had asked stateowned steel maker Krakatau Steel to build an upstream steel plant in South Kalimantan which is known as an iron ore producer, he said.

To attract foreign investment in the steel industry, the government would provide foreign investors with fiscal incentives in accordance with Government Regulation No. 1/2007, he said.

In addition, it had also invited Chinese and Indian steel producers to cooperate with domestic counterparts in developing steel industry, he said.
"An Indian (steel producer) has already invested in Central Kalimantan," he said. (ANT)
