WEAPONRY : Indonesia Began To Make Their Own Warships

BATAM – Minister of Defence Purnomo Yusgiantoro on Monday (25/4), launched the first local made warship in Terminal Batu Ampar, Batam, Riau Islands. The type of fast ship 40 missile, named the Ship of Republic of Indonesia Clurit-641 was operated in the waters of western Indonesia.

"The launch is a milestone in the self-reliance of national defence industry," said Purnomo. Attending the launch of the ship, among others, the TNI Commander Rear Admiral Agus Suhartono, Chief of TNI Staff of Navy Admiral Soeparno, Director of PT Palindo Marine Shipyard Herman, President Director of Bank Mandiri Zulkifli Zaini, President Director of PT Krakatau Steel Fazwar Bujang, and Vice Governor of Riau Islands Soerya Respationo.

KRI Clurit-641 was produced by PT Palindo Marine Shipyard in Batam. Raw materials of special steel which are used in the upstream and the hull is produced by PT Krakatau Steel. Financing is facilitated by Bank Mandiri.

The ship is one of two types of fast ship 40 missile (KCR) which is produced by PT Palindo Marine Shipyard Batam. Other ships are still under construction.

Zulkifli Zaini said that so far the primary equipments financing procurement of weapons systems (alutsista) is using the export credit scheme with the involvement of foreign banks. The construction project of two units KCR 40 is a pilot project in the procurement of defence equipment with local financing schemes so it is more efficient.

The financing model, 65 percent bailed out from Bank Mandiri and 35 percent financed by PT Palindo Marine Shipyard. The value project of the first KCR 40 was IDR 56.95 billion and the second was IDR 74.90 billion.

Fazwar Bujang admit, with the existing production capacity, PT Krakatau Steel is able to supply iron and steel to the needs of 50 ship types KCR per year. In principle, the state-owned enterprise is ready to serve the development of defence equipment projects in larger volume or scale.

According to the information from the Defence Industry Directorate of Ministry of Defence, not all of the equipment and raw materials in KCR 40 production is local made. However, majority, the quantity of local raw materials is high. Another thing, KCR 40 is fully done by the Indonesian youth.
