Kobe Steel to Build New Ohio Plant to Supply Steel Plates for Cars

TOKYO: Kobe Steel Ltd will build a new plant in Ohio to boost production of steel plates for automobiles amid signs of a recovery in vehicle sales in North America, company officials said Wednesday. The company aims to begin plant operations from 2013, judging that its lightweight, high-intensity steel products will meet demand from Japanese and other automakers that produce cars locally, they said.

The plant will be built by an Ohio-based company Kobe Steel has jointly set up with U.S. Steel Corp, with a total investment of about 40 billion yen. It is expected to have an annual production capacity of 500,000 tons, expanding the firms total output capacity including an existing plant to 1.5 million tons per year.
